The first leg of the Champions League semi-final between Barcelona and Inter Milan ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw, amid a goal-laden and emotional atmosphere. This result left the door open for qualification ahead of the anticipated return leg at the San Siro.
According to information from the Spanish newspaper El Nacional, the match also sent clear messages to Barcelona, most notably: Hansi Flick will not rely on Gerard Martin again in such difficult circumstances.
Martin started the match at left-back due to the absence of Alejandro Balde, who was sidelined with an injury. The German coach gave him a chance to prove himself, but it did not pay off as expected. In the first half at Montjuïc, Martin seemed affected by the intensity of the match and was under significant pressure, particularly on Inter’s right flank, where he struggled against Dumfries and Barella.
Flick chose a bold lineup that included Szczesny in goal, with a defense composed of Koundé, Iñigo, Coparsi, and Martin. However, Inter’s attacking moves quickly revealed the youngster’s lack of preparation. He lost duels, appeared hesitant with the ball, and failed to produce the desired attacking output. At the end of the first half, Flick decided to replace him with Araujo and reorganized the backline.
This substitution sent a direct message. According to sources within the club, Flick expressed his dissatisfaction with Martin’s performance and does not plan to include him again in the second leg unless circumstances dictate. Despite the continued support from the dressing room, Flick believes that Gerard has not yet proven his readiness to play in matches of such intensity and importance.
Despite the bold bet on Gerard Martin, the experiment did not succeed. Flick does not hold the player responsible for the result, but he recognizes that the scale of the match was beyond his current capabilities. A Champions League semi-final against a well-organized and solid opponent like Inter is not the ideal environment for someone lacking experience in such an event.
