Barcelona is expected to witness many surprises this summer. Despite the ongoing need to generate revenue, the first candidates who could fill the roles required by Joan Laporta and Deco have already begun to emerge. The most prominent of these names is Ronald Araújo, who—despite renewing his contract in January—has seen his days with the team become numbered due to his declining importance in the club’s plans and his recent dip in form.
According to information from the Spanish newspaper El Nacional, in addition to Araújo, Barcelona also plans to generate funds from other players who have not played key roles in the team, such as Pau Víctor, Iñaki Peña, Pablo Torre, and Ansu Fati—not to mention Andreas Christensen, who has not played due to injuries and is expected to become a free agent in 2026. However, among the names that have attracted attention on the list of transferable players is Pablo Páez “Gavi,” who until recently was considered one of the team’s mainstays.
Since joining the first team, Gavi has become an undisputed starter and is considered one of the best midfielders in the world. He earned the trust of coaches including Xavi Hernández and Ronald Koeman and became a fan favorite at Camp Nou. However, everything changed after he suffered a serious knee injury while playing for Spain, tearing his anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus.
Despite his efforts to recover, Gavi has been unable to return to his best, leaving him out of coach Hans-Dieter Flick’s plans, despite their good relationship. Although he has been given opportunities, he has not managed to secure a place in the starting lineup, falling behind players such as Dani Olmo, Frenkie de Jong, Pedri González, and even Fermín López and Marc Casadó.
Earlier this season, Gavi announced the renewal of his contract with Barcelona, but this put Laporta and Deco in a difficult position, as he informed them that he was unwilling to accept a secondary role in the team. He warned that if he is not promised a starting role, he may consider a change.
Barcelona has not closed the door on Gavi’s departure; on the contrary, the club may be willing to consider offers for the player—especially if they are sufficiently attractive. A player who was once one of the team’s most prominent figures is now drawing interest from several major clubs, making his future at Camp Nou uncertain.
