After a disappointing season in which Real Madrid finished empty-handed, the club’s management is turning its full attention to the summer transfer market, determined to rebuild the team and correct its course. The past season witnessed a clear decline in both performance and results, as Real failed to secure any titles, while Barcelona asserted its dominance domestically by winning a treble: La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.
This harsh reality has prompted Real Madrid’s management, led by Florentino Pérez, to act swiftly in strengthening the squad with new players capable of restoring the team’s champion spirit and regaining lost balance on the pitch. The summer promises to be busy for Los Blancos, with a strong desire to finalize impactful deals that will restore the club’s prestige and satisfy fans eager to see their team return to the top—both domestically and continentally.
In this context, press reports on Tuesday evening indicated that Real Madrid has identified Spanish defender Alejandro Grimaldo, Bayer Leverkusen’s full-back, as an alternative option should the deal for Benfica’s Álvaro Carreras fall through. Carreras, 22, is the primary target for the left-back position, with personal terms reportedly already agreed.
However, Benfica’s insistence on enforcing the €50 million release clause, as well as their wish to keep the player for the 2025 Club World Cup, are currently delaying the deal.
Although Grimaldo is a graduate of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, this does not pose a problem for Real Madrid’s new coach, Xabi Alonso.
In fact, Alonso knows him well from his time at Leverkusen and remains confident in Grimaldo’s technical abilities despite his Catalan roots.
