Barcelona is preparing to take decisive steps in the upcoming transfer market, focusing on several player sales to raise the necessary funds to secure new deals that will strengthen the team. This move comes amid the urgent need to update the squad and reinforce its various lines in preparation for the coming seasons, amid financial challenges that require the club to manage its resources wisely to achieve the necessary balance between sporting ambitions and economic realities.
According to information from the Spanish newspaper El Nacional, a few days ago, shortly after the season ended, news broke that surprised many observers. Ronald Araujo was removed from the transfer market, despite having been close to leaving during the winter transfer window. Juventus showed interest in signing him, and Araujo seemed receptive to the idea. Only a few close associates, including Robert Lewandowski, were able to convince him to stay. However, Araujo’s future remained uncertain, as a €65 million release clause was set to facilitate his summer move.
However, the club changed its stance, deciding to keep Araujo and put Andreas Christensen up for sale, even though his contract runs until 2026. The club would receive no compensation if Christensen left next summer.
Things then took another turn, with Hansi Flick deciding to keep Christensen and give Araujo a chance to get minutes in the back line. However, the German coach expressed disappointment with Araujo’s performance, which had not been at its best since the start of the season, especially considering his injuries. On more than one occasion, Flick preferred to rely on Eric Garcia, despite his inconsistent form, and failed to displace Pau Torres and Iñigo Martínez.
In the current situation, Flick made it clear internally that if Araujo decided to stay, he would only receive playing time in emergencies; the message was clear and unequivocal. Therefore, the club believes the best option for both parties is an immediate departure before the transfer window closes.
Reports on the program El Chiringuito de Jugones revealed that Barcelona has given Araujo until July 10 to decide his future, with a sale price set at €60 million. The club is expected to be very happy with his departure.
Araujo’s situation is critical, as this has been his least impressive season since joining the first team, making just 25 appearances, most of them as a substitute. His market value has also dropped from €70 million a year ago to around €35 million. However, Barcelona hopes to use the €60 million from his sale to fund strategic deals, most notably the signing of Neco Williams, whose release clause is close to that amount.
