In a thrilling match at Anfield, Real Madrid suffered a shock defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League. The final score of 1-0 in favor of Liverpool didn’t truly reflect the full picture of the game, as the undisputed hero was Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. He saved his team from a much heavier defeat with a series of crucial saves. However, despite his outstanding performance, which kept Real Madrid in the game, Courtois was sharply critical of some players, particularly in midfield.
Thibaut Courtois: Hero of the Match, But…
The Belgian goalkeeper was in top form throughout the match, making several brilliant saves that prevented Liverpool from securing a resounding victory. His superb stops on shots from Salah, Szoboszlai, and other Liverpool attackers made him the undisputed man of the match. However, Courtois couldn’t prevent Liverpool from scoring the only goal of the game. While the Belgian goalkeeper worked tirelessly to keep his team in the match, he pointed out that his team’s biggest issue lay in midfield, specifically with the performance of star player Aurélien Tchouaméni.
Courtois Criticizes Tchouaméni and Calls for Midfield Changes
According to the Spanish newspaper Defensa Central, Thibaut Courtois didn’t hide his dissatisfaction with Aurélien Tchouaméni’s performance in midfield during the match. Speaking after the game, he suggested that Real Madrid desperately needs a creative midfielder – a player capable of controlling the game, creating chances, and orchestrating play, much like Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić did in the past.
Courtois emphasized that Tchouaméni, despite his considerable talent, was unable to deliver the level of performance expected of a team of Real Madrid’s stature in big matches. The Belgian goalkeeper explained that the absence of a player with the qualities of Kroos or Modrić in midfield will continue to cause the team to struggle in major games, which require creativity and dynamic abilities to control the flow of the match.
Real Madrid Faces Midfield Challenges
In recent years, Real Madrid’s midfield has been the heart of the team. With players like Kroos and Modrić, the team could dominate matches thanks to their creativity, ability to move the ball smoothly, and orchestrate attacks from deep. However, in recent seasons, with the departure of key players, that responsibility has shifted to a group of younger players, including Tchouaméni. While the Frenchman has performed well in some matches, he still lacks the same creativity and overall control of the midfield that the club’s legendary players once possessed.
