Guti thoroughly analyzed what happened after Real Madrid’s crushing defeat to Benfica at the Estádio da Luz, describing the performance as disastrous by all accounts. He said: “It’s a shameful disgrace, and what’s worrying is that it reveals the true nature of this team. With a defense like that, Real Madrid can’t aspire to anything.”
Guti targeted several players, deeming their performances unworthy of wearing the famous white shirt: “Huijsen’s display is disgraceful; he’s not even at second-division level. Asensio’s performance was ridiculous; he conceded a goal and was sent off. This kind of behavior is unbecoming of top-level players. And I can’t explain the signing of Carreras.”
He also pointed out that the result could have been even worse: “The team is disjointed and fragmented, the same performance we’ve been seeing for a month. There’s no fighting spirit and no real effort. It’s a miracle they didn’t score eight goals against us.”
Regarding the team’s future in the Champions League, his assessment was equally harsh:
“I don’t see any chance for Real Madrid in Europe beyond two more matches. The gap in quality between us and the top teams is very clear.”
Guti concluded by emphasizing the need for self-criticism within the club:
“After the positive performances against Monaco and Villarreal, the team has taken a big step backward. Now is the time to work on improving everything.”
