Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has made his stance clear regarding potential defensive reinforcements during the transfer window after the club was offered the chance to sign Spanish defender Aymeric Laporte, one of the key players in Spain’s World Cup-winning squad.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Laporte expressed his willingness to join Barcelona during the latter stages of the World Cup, but the club’s sporting management did not prioritize him for the new season.

Flick believes the team does not need any new reinforcements in central defense, as he is completely satisfied with the available players unless one of the defenders leaves during the transfer window.
The German coach relies on a group of defenders led by Pau Cubarsí, alongside Ronald Araújo, Eric García, Andreas Christensen, Jules Koundé, and the young defender Álvaro Cortés. He also has faith in Gerard Martín as his first-choice left-back.
Financial and Administrative Obstacles
The report indicated that Laporte’s contract with Athletic Bilbao runs until the summer of 2028 and does not include a release clause, meaning any attempt to sign him would require direct negotiations with the Basque club.
Barcelona is keen to avoid a repeat of the difficulties that plagued its previous negotiations with Athletic Bilbao, especially after the complicated situation surrounding the attempted signing of Nico Williams, which reduces the chances of moving forward with the deal.
An Unfulfilled Relationship
This is not the first time Laporte’s name has been linked with Barcelona. He was on the club’s radar during Luis Enrique’s tenure as manager, but Athletic Bilbao stood firm on the €65 million release clause before the player moved to Manchester City in 2018.
Laporte also tried on several occasions to secure a move to Barcelona during his time in England, but the Catalan club’s financial circumstances prevented the transfer from materializing.
After his spell with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, the Spanish defender returned to Athletic Bilbao in September 2025 to begin a new chapter with the Basque club, while Barcelona remained committed to its current defensive options.
