German coach Hansi Flick, Barcelona’s manager, shocked his compatriot Marc-André ter Stegen with his vision for the Catalan club regarding the goalkeeper position next season.
The goalkeeping situation at Barcelona is expected to change, despite Ter Stegen having been the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. However, last season raised doubts about Marc, as the Catalan club is now seeking to sign Juan Garcia from Espanyol.
Garcia is expected to potentially replace Ter Stegen, while Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is set to remain as part of the squad after renewing his contract with the club.
According to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Flick and his coaching staff envision relying on Garcia as the first-choice goalkeeper — a move that could push Ter Stegen to reconsider his commitment to Barcelona and potentially open the door for a summer exit.
Flick believes the 24-year-old goalkeeper should start next season, a view shared by the club’s sporting directors. If this materializes, it will be difficult for Ter Stegen to remain at Barcelona as a backup. He may be forced to leave in search of regular playing time to maintain his position in the German national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
