The 2024/25 season officially concluded with Paris Saint-Germain claiming the Champions League title after a resounding victory over Inter Milan in the final. The match showcased the brilliance of 19-year-old French winger Désiré Doué, who is expected to become one of the brightest stars of the future. His standout performance could present a significant challenge to young Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí.

Since joining PSG last summer for €50 million, Doué has proven himself to be an exceptional talent. In just one season, he has risen from relative obscurity to global stardom.

The versatile French winger, capable of playing on both flanks as well as in an attacking midfield role, is a product of the Rennes academy—an institution that has also produced talents like Ousmane Dembélé and Eduardo Camavinga.

After a standout debut season, Doué confirmed his rising status with a stellar performance in the Champions League final, scoring twice and providing an assist. His display reinforced the notion that he is one of the most successful signings in recent years. PSG has acquired a true gem who is already shining on the European stage.

While Doué is often compared to Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, many believe the Blaugrana prodigy stands in a league of his own. Nevertheless, Doué poses a real threat to Cubarsí’s chances of winning this year’s Golden Boy award. The Barcelona defender had been a strong contender, thanks to his consistent performances, especially toward the end of the season.

Although the award has not yet been decided and Cubarsí still has time to reclaim his lead, Doué’s late-season brilliance has given him the upper hand. It now appears that the Catalan defender may have to wait until the 2026 edition for another shot at the title.

It’s worth noting that the Golden Boy award, presented by Italian newspaper Tuttosport, has already been won by four Barcelona players—making the club the most successful in the award’s history.

Alongside current holder Lamine Yamal, the prestigious accolade has previously gone to Pedri, Gavi, and Lionel Messi (in 2005).

If Cubarsí claims the title this year, Barcelona will further solidify its dominance. However, for now, it seems Doué is the frontrunner—and could bring PSG their second Golden Boy award, following Kylian Mbappé’s win in 2017.
