With German coach Hansi Flick continuing at the helm of Barcelona, a new era appears to be taking shape at Camp Nou. Flick, known for his tactical discipline and balanced attacking philosophy, is not content with the status quo. Rather, he is seeking to make extensive changes to the team’s starting lineup, in line with his technical vision and ambitions to compete in all competitions next season.
By comprehensively assessing the players’ performances and reconsidering some sensitive positions within the squad, Flick has begun laying the foundations for his new project, which may see some prominent players depart while introducing new players more suited to his tactical plans.
In light of this, German coach Hansi Flick is planning to marginalize his compatriot André ter Stegen next season, a move that could spell the end of the goalkeeper’s career with the Catalan club. According to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Flick has agreed with Barcelona’s management that Espanyol’s expected signing, Juan Garcia, will assume the role of first-choice goalkeeper next season. The newspaper, citing sources close to Flick, explained that Ter Stegen will find it difficult to secure regular playing time under his compatriot.
Barcelona is opening the door to Ter Stegen’s departure, especially as the German goalkeeper is seeking to become his country’s first-choice keeper for the 2026 World Cup, after years of remaining behind Manuel Neuer.
This move comes as part of Barcelona’s ongoing policy to rejuvenate the team. Since Joan Laporta took over as president, several key figures have left the club, including Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets, and Sergi Roberto. Ter Stegen is the last remaining member from the team that lost 8-2 to Bayern Munich in the 2020 Champions League quarterfinals.
It is worth noting that Ter Stegen’s contract with Barcelona runs until the summer of 2028.
